Is Delaware a good place to retire in? Bankrate says there’s no better

Considering retirement ? If so, the First State is the best state for you to live your best post-work life, according to Bankrate.

And it’s not just the taxes.

Here is why Delaware is the Bankrate’s top choice for retirees.

Delaware ranked the top state to retire in

Online financial resource guide Bankrate used a number of metrics to decide the best states to retire in.

Those metrics included: affordability, crime, the cost and quality of health care, weather and overall well-being.

"Delaware is a tax-friendly state for retirees. It doesn’t have state or local sales tax, and it doesn’t tax Social Security benefits," read Bankrate's retirement state rankings . "It also has lower property taxes relative to the rest of the country, averaging roughly $1,939 annually.

"The state ranks well for racial and ethnic diversity, arts and entertainment establishments per 100,000 residents and overall well-being," continued Bankrate's findings. "Compared to its population, it also has a high share of residents who are 62 and older."

Delaware ranked second in Bankrate's 2023 list of best states to retire in.

Diversity, weather factor in to Delaware's retirement ranking

Bankrate acknowledged that Delaware is a pricey state to live in, for retirees, but counters that those costs are offset by lower property taxes, combined state and local sales tax and homeowners insurance.

Delware also scored high for its diversity and generally mild temperatures.

" Earthquakes , tornados, and hurricanes are also rare, and the climate is temperate."
