Law enforcement has released more information about a shooting in the Murphytown area of Yancey County that left multiple tree service workers with "serious injuries" and led to an officer-involved shooting on the afternoon of July 24, according to the Yancey County Sheriff's Office.
Lucas Murphy, 36, a resident of the community, confronted contract workers who were clearing the right of way for a power company, an updated news release from the sheriff's office said. Based on a large law enforcement presence in the area, the confrontation occurred near the intersection of Huntdale Road and Murphytown Road near Green Mountain.
Murphy was armed during the confrontation with the tree service workers, three of whom were shot. A previous news release said Murphy shot four people.
"All three victims sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals while they are receiving medical treatment," the updated release said.
When deputies responded to the incident, they encountered gunfire while attempting to capture Murphy. During the exchange, an officer shot and injured Murphy, resulting in an officer-involved shooting, according to law enforcement.
"Murphy was transported to an area hospital, where he is being treated for his injury," the release said.
The Yancey County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the "serious incident" and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Yancey County Emergency Management and N.C. State Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
