    13 candidates running to fill vacant seat following at large councilmember’s resignation in Prince George’s County

    PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — In Prince George’s County, 13 candidates are participating in a special primary election following the resignation of Councilmember Mel Franklin on June 14.

    Among the list of candidates are nine Democrats and Four Republicans.

    Franklin left the position after he was accused of stealing campaign funds , according to charging documents.

    The special primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with early voting starting on July 31.

    Mail-in ballots started going out on Tuesday.

    The special general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5.

    Franklin is facing 20 charges , including embezzlement, perjury and more, according to court documents.
