Warner Bros. has finally announced The Boy and The Heron Max release date for the upcoming streaming debut of Studio Ghibli’s latest Oscar-winning animated movie from director Hayao Miyazaki. This comes after Max had recently extended its multiyear U.S. deal with the acclaimed Japanese animation studio.

“After losing his mother in a hospital fire, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside,” reads the synopsis. “There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.”

When is the The Boy and the Heron Max release date?

The Boy and the Heron is scheduled to make its streaming debut on Friday, September 6, exclusively on Max. It was written and directed by Miyazaki — his first directorial project in a decade. He’s best known for directing classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo.

The English-dubbed version of the hand-drawn animated film features the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh. It was produced by Studio Ghibli founder Toshio Suzuki.
