ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — It has been hazy the last few days in the Western U.S. and Canada after recent wildfires.

Health experts are warning that some people may want to be careful when outside because of the air quality.

Last year in Illinois, there were times in June when the air quality reached unhealthy levels. While this year is not as bad, doctors still advise those with lungs that are not fully functioning should be on alert.

One pulmonologist said people with compromised breathing may experience flared lungs from inhaling smokey air.

He said the best way to avoid discomfort is to stay inside.

“Closing windows, closing doors as much as we like to get fresh air in when that’s bad, you don’t want to get that extra fresh air in. Also, using things like HEPA filters, purifiers, these sorts of things make a big difference,” said Carle Pulmonary Medicine M.D. Brent Kaufman. “If you do have to go outside for a prolonged period of time using, you can use things such as masks.”

Officials said if the air quality is making it hard to breathe, you should see your doctor.
