MISSOURI – A new study conducted by the Commonwealth Fund ranked states nation-wide based upon their overall health care provided to women.

The fund’s most recent study focused on women’s health care coverage and quality alongside mental, reproductive, and maternal health, syphilis rates, COVID-19, and even domestic violence.

According to the study , Missouri ranked as a “bottom-performing” state overall for women’s health, coming in at 40th out of 51.

As the seventh-worst state for health and reproductive care, Missouri was recorded to have the eighth-highest rate of death for breast and cervical cancer. The state was also noted to have the sixth-lowest rate for Pap smear screenings among adult women, which are used to detect cervical cancer.

In regard to mental health, when analyzing data from women between the ages of 18 and 64, Missouri was recorded to have the third-highest rate of poor mental health among women state-wide. This data came from women reporting “14 or more poor mental health days” in one month.

The study also ranked Missouri 39 out of 51 for healthcare coverage, access and affordability.

According to the study, it was noted that one in 10 women between the ages of 19 and 63 were without health insurance in the state of Missouri. Nearly one in five of those women skipped a doctor’s visit due to the cost of the appointment.

The survey also analyzed the number of maternity care providers statewide. In Missouri, there are 74 maternity care providers per 100,000 women within childbearing age. The report says this rate is lower than the national average of 79 providers per 100,000 women.

Despite this, Missouri performed best on low-risk cesarean births per 100 women giving birth and the state also has a low rate of postpartum depression.

Overall, Illinois was ranked among the “above average” states for women’s healthcare. Out of all 50 states, Illinois came in 16th for women’s health.

Among other states, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island were the three highest-ranked states with the best-performing healthcare, while Nevada, Texas and Mississippi were consecutively ranked as the lowest.

Founded in 1918, the Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation that seeks to “promote a high-performing, equitable health care system.”
