SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — A man charged with 25 counts off mistreating animals awaits extradition back to Greenville from Georgia.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began April 1, after deputies were made aware of the potential mistreatment.

The sheriff’s office said that dogs were found in “deplorable conditions” at the Lazydays Court residence. Some dogs were malnourished, living in crates and covered in their own waste.

The suspect, 37-year-old Joevaughn Leon Meredith, is currently lodged at the McDuffie County Detention Center. Officials did not share how Meredith was apprehended.

Meredith has been arrested for animal cruelty before in 2022, after more than 40 dogs were taken to Greenville County Animal Care.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s office added that the investigation is ongoing at this time, as officials are still working to identify more suspects and areas where the mistreatment occurred.
