HENRY COUNTY, Va. ( WFXR ) — The Henry County Board of Supervisors reports they voted unanimously to apply to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Smart Scale program for funding a project to improve US-220.

According to the Board of Supervisors, local business and education leaders have recently been lobbying local lawmakers to enhance the southbound lanes of US-220 by eliminating safety hazards to commuters and commercial freights. Community leaders hope these efforts will help increase safety and regional economic development.

The board says a priority this year is to reconstruct the intersection of US-220 South and Route 87 using a ‘Continuous Green T’ design that will allow traffic to move more efficiently and safely through the intersection. The design would allow one side of the major street to pass through the intersection without stopping, while the opposite side can be controlled by a traffic signal.

If implemented, traffic on the southbound side lane of US-220 in Henry County would be able to travel through unless turning left onto Rt. 87. Traffic turning left from Rt. 87 would use a merging lane to continue US-220.

The Smart Scale program is a process that VDOT uses to evaluate transportation-related projects. It evaluates factors like improved safety, reduced congestion, increased accessibility, contribution to economic development, and impact on the environment.
