PERRY COUNTY, Miss. ( WHLT ) – Perry County students will head back to class next week. There are some new policies and schedule changes that parents and students will need to be aware of.

The Perry County School District has been on an upward trajectory in test scores and proficiency, and Perry Central High School plans to build upon that success.

“This year, we’re going to focus a whole lot on acceleration. Oftentimes, teachers struggle with the acceleration component once a student masters a standard. So, we’ve got some things in place that will focus on acceleration. And we’ve got a curriculum called ‘Level All,’ which is a family engagement tool where parents and students are involved with career planning, college planning, and scholarship opportunities,” said Joshua Yeager, principal of Perry Central High School.

The school is also introducing a new flex schedule with specific days dedicated to academic awareness, college and career planning and extracurricular activities.

“The fourth block will be split. We will have a fourth period and then a fifth period, and those sections will be 48 minutes apiece. In fourth period, every student and every teacher will have a ‘Level All’ period. They will have an academic awareness session. They will have Club Fridays,” said Yeager.

The district is also implementing a strict no cellphone or electronics policy. Students will face disciplinary action if caught with electronics in class.

“We’ve seen an increase in the misuse of cell phones, and to promote safety and school wellness and to limit interactions between students that may not need to take place, we felt that it was in the best interest of the school,” Yeager said.

Changes are being made to the student dress codes. Any holes in pants may not show skin, leggings can only be worn under a dress or skirt, shirts must be tucked in and hoods may not be worn.

Students will return to class on Thursday, August 1. Perry Central will hold an open house on Tuesday, July 30 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
