(CUSTER COUNTY, Colo.) — The Custer County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a disturbance that quickly turned into a barricaded suspect situation on Wednesday, July 24.

On Wednesday morning at approximately 8:15 a.m., Custer County deputies were notified of a disturbance at Dollar General. When deputies arrived and contacted the suspect, he drove away in a silver Pontiac Trans Am, sideswiping a deputy’s vehicle.

The suspect — identified as Derek Ming of Westcliffe — drove northbound on Highway 69, but after a few blocks, deputies ended the pursuit while Ming continued to drive northbound at a very high rate of speed.

A short time later, CCSO said Ming returned to his home on Lea Lane in Westcliffe. Deputies attempted to talk Ming out of the home, but he refused to exit. An ambulance was staged nearby and a crisis intervention negotiator contacted the suspect by telephone, but the suspect still refused to leave.

CCSO then contacted their station’s psychologist for input on how to end the barricade situation peacefully. At around 10:37 a.m., Ming exited the home without any intervention. He is currently facing felony charges of vehicular eluding and more.

There were no injuries, and the deputy’s vehicle only had minor damage.
