Lionel Messi has declared his shock as Argentina saw defeat in a remarkable turn of events in its initial match against Morocco at the Olympic Games .

In a startling game played out at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, Argentina found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard with a 2-1 loss. A casual tap-in alongside a penalty by Soufiane Rahimi pushed Morocco to a clear 2-0 advantage before Argentina's Giuliano Simeone sliced through the defense from the bench to bring the scoreline back to 2-1.

The clock wound down toward an electrifying finale that was supercharged by a huge 15 minutes of added time. Cristian Medina seemingly nailed an undeniable equalizer with a rebounded header off the bar at the 106 minute-mark only for events to take a twist.

After firecrackers created mayhem on field leading to the Argentinean bench being evacuated and resulting in hordes of Moroccan fans breaching security to swarm the pitch, it appeared the game ended at an even 2-2.

However, revealing shocking details more than an hour later, reports showed that VAR had flagged Medina's goal as offside; contrary to popular belief, the game wasn't over yet. The teams were called back to finish the remaining three minutes in a deserted stadium, where Morocco retained its lead to ultimately claim victory.

An exasperated Messi, who is not participating with the Argentina Olympic squad but recently helped steer Argentina to defend their title at the Copa America, reacted to the bizarre happenings in an Instagram post. "Insolito", he wrote in Spanish, which translates to "extraordinary" or "unusual" in English. It was a fitting summary from the iconic forward.

Javier Mascherano, now at the helm for Argentina's Olympic team, couldn't contain his frustration during a chaotic match that saw frequent interruptions from pitch invaders and tactics by Morocco to disrupt the game's flow. Post-game, he didn't mince words, declaring to the press: "It's the biggest circus I've ever seen in my life!"

The Argentine players - placed in Group B alongside Morocco, Iraq, and Ukraine - aims to bounce back from this setback when they go up against Iraq on Saturday.

Argentina is showcasing its future stars at the Olympics, with established players like Messi and Angel Di Maria not involved. Messi, who suffered an injury in the Copa America final, might have actually seen his last international tournament at 37. Nicolas Otamendi stands out as one of the few veteran presences in a squad focused on emerging talent.
