The Red Line experienced severe delays Wednesday night after an apparent suicide at South Station.

Around 6 p.m., the MBTA announced delays of around 30 minutes due to a “medical emergency” at South Station. Shortly after, they extended shuttle bus service to replace trains between the Kendall and JFK/UMass stops.

A man intentionally stepped onto the tracks at the outbound Red Line platform in South Station, Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said in a statement to Boston.com. Sullivan confirmed the man died due to the injuries he sustained.

“On behalf of the transit Police Department and the entire MBTA organization we offer our most sincere condolences” to those close to the deceased, Sullivan said.

Regular train service resumed and shuttle buses were phased out around 8:30 p.m., according to MBTA social media updates.
