MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man went to his ex-girlfriend’s workplace and shot her after she told him she no longer wanted to date him.

Sherwon Newsom, 34, was booked in the Shelby County Jail Wednesday for attempted second-degree murder and is being held on a $500,000 bond.

The shooting happened on June 8 in front of The Studio Hair Salon in the 2700 block of Kimball Avenue. Officers said when they got there, they found the victim sitting in the front door of the Bethel Grove salon with a gunshot wound to her left arm.

The victim told investigators that Newsom showed up at the salon after she ended their relationship, and she agreed to go outside and talk to him. She said Newsom became irate, punched her in the face, pulled out a Draco gun, and shot her.

The victim said the injury to her arm was so severe she had to undergo multiple surgeries, and she would not be able to use her arm for several months.

Days after the shooting, the victim shared her story on social media. She warned other women to get out of abusive relationships and said she was “almost loved to death.” The post has been shared hundreds of times.

A witness told police she saw a woman fighting with a man over a gun before the woman was shot. Officers found a rifle shell casing in the parking lot and said two bullets hit a vehicle on the lot.

Newsom is also charged with vandalism and the use of a firearm during a dangerous felony. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday. He has a bail hearing on Friday.
