REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Art and Katisha Simril arrived at Reagan National Airport (DCA) to pick up their bags from Jacksonville, Fla. Her bags are there – his are still up in the air.

“Every flight we was on, both American and Delta, they both were canceled,” Simril said.

They are among the victims of last week’s massive IT outage that grounded more than 6,500 Delta flights, causing headaches for airline employees and passengers.

A massive pile of bags now sits in DCA’s Delta baggage claim office, waiting for owners to pick them up.

“I haven’t showered in a day,” said Casey Merritt of Tysons Corner, Va. “So I’m in the same clothes as [Tuesday] night.”

She and her family got stuck in Detroit for a day.

“I was hoping we were going to miss it and we weren’t going to be part of [the cancellations and delays]. But we were,” Merritt said.

The CEO of Delta released a statement Wednesday, saying the last few days have been difficult.

“To our customers who were impacted, I want to thank you for your patience and apologize again for the disruption to your travel,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian stated.

The airline expects to be fully operational by Thursday.
