As the third quarter of the year is ramping up, the Times-News is looking back at the restaurants in that opened and closed in Henderson County last quarter, as well as a look ahead at what’s on the horizon.
Opened
Auction House Food & Drink Hall
The food hall, owned and operated by KO Restaurant Group opened in April in Fletcher. The five food concepts in the hall offer dining experiences ranging from Yucatan-style cuisine to fish to burgers. Cocktails, beer and other drinks are also available in the food hall.
Auction House Food & Drink Hall is located at 29 Fanning Bridge Road.
Root & Bone at The Crossroads
The first North Carolina location of Root & Bone , a restaurant concept from James Beard Award-nominated chefs Jeffrey McInnis and Janine Booth, opened at The Crossroads in Horse Shoe in June. The new event space opened at the same time, owned by John Turchin, who also owns The Horse Shoe Farm. The new event space and restaurant is touted as a place for locals with more affordable pricing than Turchin’s other venture. The Crossroads is home to a restaurant, bar, outdoor deck and porch, all aimed at bringing in a local crowd.
The Crossroads and Root & Bone is located at 4165 Brevard Road.
Hey Chickadee
Also in June, the stationary food trailer Hey Chickadee reopened at a new permanent location. Previously located in south Hendersonville near the roundabout, the trailer is now located at 159 Osceola Road. Hey Chickadee specializes in honey soft serve ice cream, known as “Honey Creemee.” In addition to the ice cream, the trailer is known for its Saturday special of Brazilian French toast. A rotating lunch menu is served on Saturdays and Sundays and brunch is served on the last Saturday of every month.
Closed
The Kingmakers Draft
Opened in the early days of the pandemic, The Kingmaker’s Draft was a board game bar concept that also offered snacks for patrons to munch on during a game session.
In April of this year, owner Kurt Darnell took to Instagram to announce the closure of the spot.
“Over the past few months we’ve watched the Kingmaker fall further behind after years of struggle and I feel like it’s time to wind down and eventually shut our doors,” the Instagram post said. “We’ve spent a lot of time discussing whether or not we hold and survive until summer, but I find the desperation with which I’ve pursued ‘one more month’ is too great a weight to continue carrying.”
The former Main Street business began selling its equipment and closed shortly after.
Moe’s Original BBQ
Though it plans to reopen this summer, the Hendersonville location of Moe’s Original BBQ closed its Main Street location in May.
Owner and operator Dave Rice told the Times-News in May that making the move made “complete sense” because a better location with more parking and a more sustainable building became available. The restaurant operated at the original location for more than a decade.
When it reopens, Moe’s Original BBQ will be located at 1794 Asheville Highway
Coming soon
Tipsy Taco
While no official opening date has been set yet, the South Carolina-based chain restaurant is coming to Hendersonville soon, according to owner Frank Roman. Tipsy Taco has locations in Simpsonville, Greer, Seneca, Duncan and Greenville, South Carolina. In addition to the Hendersonville location, Roman also operates the Duncan and Woodruff Road location in Greenville.
When open, the restaurant will serve its signature “Tex-Mex with a little twist” that includes tacos, salads, fajitas, nachos, bowls, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas and more. Margaritas are a staple of the drink menu with other cocktails, wine and a rotating selection of beer on tap.
Tipsy Taco will be located at 119 South Main St.
Caffe REL
The Franklin-based restaurant has plans to expand to Hendersonville this fall, according to co-owner Tracy Passmore.
Caffe REL will serve the French-Italian bistro food it has become known for in Franklin.
“We’re a little bit different than most of the restaurants I’ve seen,” Passmore told the Times-News in June. “We want to be very classy and a little upscale.”
Caffe REL will be located at 425 North Main St.
