At the 2024 Olympic Games , the U.S. women's national soccer team will be looking to reestablish itself as the world's best.

Over the previous decade, the USWNT went on a long run of international dominance, winning Olympic gold in 2012 followed by World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2019. However, a disappointing showing at the Tokyo Games was followed by a 2023 World Cup that saw the team make its earliest-ever exit from that tournament.

Under new head coach Emma Hayes, a generational change that was happening slowly has been accelerated, with new stars like Trinity Rodman and Naomi Girma being given bigger roles. That hasn't come without controversy: superstar forward Alex Morgan was left off the Olympic roster purely for performance reasons, and only 10 of the 23 players from last year's World Cup are headed to Paris for the 2024 Olympics.

Hayes faces a tricky situation, as the former Chelsea boss will have coached her new side in just four games before the Olympic soccer tournament kicks off on July 25. The pressure is on for the USWNT to return to the top of the heap in world soccer, but there will be no easy games at this tournament.

In the group stage, the USWNT will take on a Zambia side featuring 2024 NWSL MVP candidate Barbra Banda, while Germany and Australia will be dreaming of leaving Paris with medals of their own. If the U.S. handles its business in Group B, teams like World Cup champions Spain and perennial contenders like Japan and France await.
