‘A tremendous loss’: Beloved Pittsburgh Allderdice teacher, coach dies unexpectedly

The Pittsburgh Public Schools community is mourning the loss of a teacher and coach at Pittsburgh Allderdice.
Jerry Haslett joined the Pittsburgh Allderdice staff in 2007 as a business teacher. He started his career with the school district in 2001.
The following year, he took over as the school’s head football coach and led the team to its first City League Championship title in 50 years in 2017. He also led the team to a championship win again in 2018 and 2021.
“It’s a tremendous loss,” Haslett’s friend, Joe Zeglowitsch said. “Perfectionist, intensity, teacher, mentor. It all encompassed him.”
Zeglowitsch said he last talked to his friend Wednesday afternoon. They played a round of golf together on Tuesday.
“I got the call from his wife that there was an accident and Jerry had some issues,” he said.
Zeglowitsch tells Channel 11 that Haslett suffered a medical emergency while driving.
“He was a very good friend. When I lost my wife, he was there,” Zeglowitsch said. “I had triple bypass. No one was allowed to get in. Jerry got in. I had one eye open, there’s Jerry standing there, ‘You all right?’”
Haslett, who comes from a football family, also served as the school’s Activities and Athletic Directors, planning homecoming dances and football plays.
Haslett himself was a standout player and member of the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame.
“The old cliche, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree but in our situation, there was also a peach under the tree. His sister Judy,” Zeglowitsch said.
“Coach Haslett was known for his hard work, quick wit, and heart of gold. He always put students first and developed long-lasting relationships with students and peers. His impact stretched far beyond their time in high school, with many joining him as peers and assistant coaches on the football team,” a release from Pittsburgh Public Schools said.
“Mr. Haslett leaves a lasting mark on our hearts and minds, and his memory will live on through the students he served,” the release continued. “Jerry was a cherished member of our Pittsburgh Allderdice and Pittsburgh Public Schools community. He will be greatly missed by all who know him.”
Student Assistance providers will be available to students who need support.
