SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS — The Spring Lake Heights Board of Education (BOE) during its Monday, July 22 meeting introduced a policy that would ban electric bicycles (e-bikes) on school grounds throughout the year.

The policy would prohibit “low-speed electric bicycles, low-speed electric scooters, motorized bicycles, motorized scooters and motorized skateboards” on school property at any time.

“We have great concerns about students coming to and from school when we are responsible for them,” Spring Lake Heights Superintendent and Principal John Spalthoff said. “This policy will then ban them from being allowed on school premises and thereby not enabling the students to ride them to and from school and, hopefully, protecting (them).”

Spalthoff said that the policy was formed in collaboration with the borough’s police department; he said the department is aware of the uptick in E-bike usage and, with the traffic on Route 71, the danger for students going to and leaving the elementary school.

The policy does not apply to everyone on school grounds, stating that those exempt are ones with “electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters or other electric mobility devices specifically designed for students, staff members or visitors with a disability.”
