Former President Donald Trump distanced himself from Project 2025 — a blueprint created by a right-wing think tank which lays out a series of conservative policy proposals for a new administration. Yet Trump’s own running mate — Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) — wrote a glowing foreword for a soon-to-be published book by Project 2025’s architect.

In a phone call to Fox & Friends Thursday, the former president — responding to a question from Brian Kilmeade — tried to distance himself from the conservative blueprint.

“It’s a group of very, very conservative people,” Trump said of the Project 2025 contributors. “They wrote a document that many of the points are fine. Many of the points are absolutely ridiculous. I have nothing to do with the document. I’ve never seen the document. I’ve seen certain things that are said in it. And it’s a group of very conservative people that probably like me. But it doesn’t matter, because it doesn’t speak for me. They wrote something that I disagree with in many cases, and in some cases you agree.”

Despite Trump’s efforts to disavow the project, many of his strongest allies are very much involved. According to CNN , at least 140 people who have worked for Trump were involved in Project 2025, including six of his ex-Cabinet secretaries. And Trump’s running mate — Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) — wrote a glowing foreword for a soon-to-be published book by Project 2025’s chief architect, Kevin Roberts .

“Never before has a figure with Roberts’s depth and stature within the American Right tried to articulate a genuinely new future for conservatism,” Vance wrote . “We are now all realizing that it’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets.”

Project 2025 proposes massive changes to the executive branch — such as disbanding the departments of education and commerce, and reclassifying more than 50,000 federal employees as political appointees, meaning they can be fired for political reasons.

Even though many people close to him were involved with Project 2025, Trump claims any suggestion that he is tied to the document is “pure disinformation” by Democrats.

“I know nothing about Project ’25,” Trump said. “I haven’t seen the document. I don’t intend to really see the document. And it’s a group of people that got together that wrote some kind of a dream document for them, but it has absolutely nothing to do with me. And it’s just disinformation, Brian, by the Democrats. It’s pure disinformation.”
