More than 300,000 Rhode Islanders have unclaimed property being held for safe keeping by the state government.

And starting this week, there is a new website to find it: https://www.findrimoney.gov/

General Treasurer James Diossa's office announced the new website early this week, replacing the old website, https://www.findrimoney.com .

People visiting the old website will be automatically redirected to the new one.

What unclaimed property is being kept?

According to a news release, the Office of the Treasurer recovers unclaimed cash and assets from:

    • Businesses
    • Banks
    • Landlords
    • Safe deposit boxes
    • Utility companies

The release said many Rhode Islanders don't know they have unclaimed property until they search the database. A quick search of the database shows insurance claims, closed bank accounts/safe deposit boxes, security deposits and even cash from online sports betting apps like DraftKings.

How to search for unclaimed property in Rhode Island

Rhode Islanders who think they may have unclaimed property can visit https://www.findrimoney.gov/ , then enter their first and last name into the search. They can enter their town and/or Zip code to further narrow down results.

From there, hitting the "claim" button will start the process to reclaim their assets.
