If you have a cucumber habit and regularly shop at Aldi, Walmart or Kroger, you might want to check your fridge.

Earlier this month, Wiers Farm in northern Ohio issued a recall of whole and bagged salad cucumbers due to possible contamination with listeria. The bacteria causes a foodborne illness that can be very serious for some people , including pregnant adults, seniors and people with weakened immune symptoms.

This week, that recall was expanded to include bagged zucchini, squash, green beans and several pepper varieties.

While there have been no illnesses reported as of Monday, according to the recall notice, some of the impacted products were shipped to Aldi, Walmart and Kroger stores in Kentucky. Here’s the full list of recalled products, along with what to know about listeria and the infection it’s known to cause.

    Which products have been recalled?

The company’s initial recall included whole and bagged cucumbers sold at Walmart stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio with pack dates between June 5-6.

This latest recall is much more expansive and now includes stores in Kentucky. Products involved in this expanded recall were packed between July 5-12.

What are the symptoms of a listeria infection?

According to the federal Food and Drug Administration, symptoms of listeriosis (listeria) typically begin a few hours or days after eating the contaminated food. However, more severe forms of the illness may take anywhere from three days to three months to develop.

    Symptoms of listeria include:

    • Fever

    • Chills

    • Headache

    • Upset stomach

    • Diarrhea

    • Nausea

    • Vomiting

    • Muscle aches

    • Confusion

    • Loss of balance

    • Convulsions

More serious cases of listeria can cause sepsis, meningitis or encephalitis (swelling of the brain).

According to the Mayo Clinic, listeria is likely to only cause mild signs and symptoms in the mother during pregnancy but consequences for the baby can be severe.
