Seeming to define an entire era of music, musician John Mayall showcased his love for the guitar as he gained the title “godfather of the British blues.” And given the title, it comes as no surprise that Mayall spent almost seven decades touring the world, entertaining fans from all walks of life. But it wasn’t just the fans who loved Mayall as many stars like Ron Wood, Geezer Butler, and even Mick Jagger took a moment to remember the musician, who recently passed away at 90 years old. With such a rich history in music, Eric Clapton recalled the impact Mayall had on him as they once shared the stage together.

Given his love for the guitar, Clapton gained high praise from Gibson and Rolling Stone as each placed him on their Greatest Guitarists of All Time lists. Like Mayall, Clapton spent the last few decades touring and performing. And with Mayall passing away, it seemed only fitting to take a trip into the past for a special performance featuring Mayall and Clapton. Taking the stage together, the duo perfected “All Your Love.”

As one commenter of the performance so perfectly put it, John is “jamming with the angels now!”

Eric Clapton Honors John Mayall With Touching Video

Although uploaded over five years ago, fans continue to praise Mayall and Clapton for the performance. Comments included, “Imagine a world without Eric Clapton. Peter Green. The Rolling Stones. Led Zeppelin. Deep purple. Doctor Feelgood. British blues. Well we would have had a world without them if it wasn’t for Jon Mayall.” Another comment read, “John Mayall launched so many great jazz and blues musicians. He has released about 1 album a year for the past 60 years. Just incredible talent and I love this collaboration.”

Taking a moment to honor Mayall after his passing, Clapton shared a heartfelt message on social media. He recalled how Mayall helped him continue forward with his career. “I want to say thank you, chiefly, for rescuing me from oblivion… when I was a young man around the age of 18 or 19, when I decided I was going to quit music.” He added, “He was my mentor; and, as a surrogate father, he taught me all I really know, and gave me the courage and enthusiasm to express myself without fear, without limit.”

While already missing his friend, Clapton concluded, “I hope to see him on the other side. Thank you, John. I love you; I’ll see you soon, but not yet. Not yet, as they say in the Gladiator movie.”
