Memphis weather: Flash flood warning issued for parts of Shelby, DeSoto counties

By Jacob Wilt, Memphis Commercial Appeal,

    2024-07-25

The National Weather Service's Memphis Office issued multiple flash flood warning for portions of DeSoto County and Shelby County Thursday morning. The warnings are estimated to affect at least 560,000 people.

The two warning areas affect much of DeSoto's northeastern portion, including northern Southaven and most of Olive Branch. In Shelby County, most of Germantown, Collierville, East Memphis and South Memphis are affected. The larger warning will last until 1:30 p.m., while the warning specific to Olive Branch will last until noon.

What to do during a flash flood?

It should go without saying (and it's been said to death), but the NWS highly recommends avoiding both walking and driving through flooded areas and streets. The majority of flood related deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially aware of any flowing or rushing water.

What does the forecast look like for the rest of the week?

Memphis area residents should expect the rain and gloomy skies to continue for a while. NWS is currently predicting a chance of showers and thunderstorms every day until Wednesday at minimum.

Despite the wet weather, Memphis won't be getting a full blast of summer heat for the rest of the week. By Saturday, highs will still only reach 86, with lows as cool as 73. By Monday however, highs can be expected to reach 91 and above, and continue into the week alongside continuing scattered showers and thunderstorms.
