Six House Democrats voted with Republicans to condemn the Biden administration — and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris — for their failure to secure the United States’ southern border with Mexico on Thursday.

Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME), Yadira Caraveo (D-CO), Don Davis (D-NC) Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Mary Peltola (D-AK) all voted for the resolution sponsored by GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and put to a vote on the House floor.

The document first outlined Harris’s prescribed role in addressing the border crisis and noted, among other items, that the former Border Patrol chief had never been spoken to by either Harris or President Joe Biden and the skyrocketing levels of illegal immigration into the country under their administration.

It went on to say that “the House of Representatives strongly condemns the Biden Administration and its Border Czar, Kamala Harris’s, failure to secure the United States border; affirms that the American people deserve elected officials who understand the gravity of the crisis at the border and who will execute the policies to fix the border crisis; clearly and firmly states that the continuation of the Biden, Harris border policies would be disastrous for both the United States and the American people.”

The endorsement of the resolution by more than a handful of elected Democrats is notable given that it marks a blow to Harris as she settles into her new role as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president with much of the party coalescing around her. It’s also notable given the fact that the border and immigration more generally are likely to be key to the GOP’s strategy during its general election campaign.

Polls have indicated that voters consider immigration to factor heavily into voters’ decisions and the GOP has derided Harris for her performance as “border czar” even though some have disputed the extent of her role in addressing the issue.
