Ottawa County finds West Nile virus in mosquito

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Ottawa County has recorded its first detection of West Nile virus so far this summer.

The Ottawa County Department of Public Health says the virus was found in a mosquito pool in the southwestern part of the county as part of routine tracking.

No people in Ottawa County — or statewide, for that matter — have contracted West Nile so far this year.

West Nile has also been detected in mosquito pools in Kent County , the most recent state data shows , and Kent and Calhoun counties have recorded Jamestown Canyon virus — another mosquito-borne illness — in mosquito pools. Birds in Mason County have contracted West Nile.

There is no vaccine and no cure for West Nile virus , which can result in symptoms like headaches, body aches, joint pain and fatigue. About 1 in 150 people infected can develop a serious case, including encephalitis or meningitis. Though it’s rare, West Nile virus can be fatal.

You can protect yourself by avoiding mosquito bites:

• Wear a mosquito repellent that contains 10% to 35% DEET.
• Stay indoors at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Wear light-colored clothing, as well as long sleeves and pants.
• Remove standing water in your yard, which can be a mosquito breeding ground.
• Keep window and door screens in good repair.
