The Reds are yet to dip into the transfer market this summer despite the start of a new era at Anfield . Slot has of course taken over from Jurgen Klopp as head coach, while Richard Hughes has been appointed as the club’s new sporting director, with former transfer chiefs Michael Edwards and Julian Ward returning to work with FSG .
With just over three weeks until the new season kicks off at Ipswich on August 17, fans have grown slightly restless at the lack of signings. Speaking ahead of the first game of the Reds’ pre-season tour of the United States against Real Betis though, Slot explained why the club is yet to make any moves.
“The first aim is to work with these players,” Slot said. “The disadvantage is that many of them aren't here yet. The positive is that it gives us time to take a good look at the youngsters.
“There is an important line at the club that young players come through. Our standards are really high when it comes to bringing in new players. “Of course, Richard (Hughes) and I are trying to improve the squad where possible.”
Slot went on to suggest (as per Lewis Steele ) that his team is good enough to compete without making any transfers, although he added that it would be a surprise if there are no signings in the next month.
The new Liverpool boss also confirmed that more of the club’s stars are set to return to training soon. Diogo Jota is set to join up with the squad in Pittsburgh ahead of the Betis game, while Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch are due to arrive later in the trip – the remaining players are expected to start training back at the AXA Training Centre.
Liverpool says: Some encouraging news then. Hopefully it won't be too long before we see some new faces arriving, and ideally they might be secured in time for that opening game at Ipswich in a few weeks.
