Stan Collymore sends transfer warning to Liverpool fans after quiet start to window

Ex- Liverpool forward Stan Collymore has urged Reds supporters to remain calm when it comes to summer transfer deals in the age of PSR .

So far this summer, Liverpool has yet to sign a player yet to bolster new boss Arne Slot's squad, which has served as a form of concern for Reds fans eager to see the club strengthen their ranks. However, Collymore has warned Liverpool supporters to be careful what they wish for.

This summer has seen Premier League clubs have to navigate the murky waters of PSR, with Aston Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest all having been forced into making deals amongst each other to avoid a points deduction next term.

In the case of Newcastle, while they brought in a good chunk of change for two players, Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, who did not score a senior goal for the Magpies, PSR issues still led to them losing a pair of youngsters who should have been part of Eddie Howe's squad for years to come.

And with that in mind, Collymore believes Liverpool are better off being as cautious as possible with their signings, rather than spending recklessly. Writing in his CaughtOffside column, Collymore said: "Liverpool fans are unhappy at the club’s lack of transfer business this summer, but what seems to happen with progressive coaches, and I saw it with Unai Emery when he came to Aston Villa, is that they’ll have a really good look at the academy and at who’s loaned out first.

Who would you like to see Liverpool bring in this summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

"I think that the fundamentals with Liverpool at this point are fairly similar to Villa in terms of Arne Slot wanting to assess what he’s got, and that’s not just in the first team squad.

"What the club don’t wan’t and what football should never be about, but what football fans have indulged over the last 10 years is the ridiculous yellow tie, yellow dress wearing Sky Sports News Deadline Day brigade, where fans are just hoping that the club gets anybody through the door.

"Especially now with FFP, clubs need to be more creative. What do Liverpool fans really want? Their club blowing £50m/£60m on a player that will end up being surplus to requirements, or blowing £5m a year on a recruitment guy that keeps them with a pipeline of the world’s best talent over the next five or six years. For me, it’s a no brainer. The latter scenario means the football club is sustainable, works better and their recruitment looks much more solid."
