Sergio Garcia finally achieved LIV Golf 'dream' in wake of Open heartbreak

Sergio Garcia described winning his maiden LIV Golf title on home soil at Real Club Valderrama earlier this month as 'a dream come true'.

Garcia completed a Spanish double at the iconic European course, clinching the individual title, as well as the team crown alongside his Fireballs teammates. The former Masters champion is a Valderrama specialist, having won around the track on three occasions during his time on the DP World Tour.

He made it win No. 4 at the course close to his heart in LIV's second trip to Andalucia two weeks ago, benefiting from a brutal one-foot miss by Anirban Lahiri at the final hole, which forced a two-man playoff with Garcia.

Fresh off the back of shooting a five-under-par 66 in the final round, Garcia prevailed in the two-man battle to ensure he came away with a Valderrama double. Reminiscing on the day two weeks ago at LIV UK, the Spanish star told Mirror Sports US: "It was a dream come true.

"To get my first win with LIV after having a handful of chances to do it, but then do it in Spain in a playoff, and the way it all happened it was definitely very special and it was a very proud moment." It was a day full of success for Spain, with Carlos Alcaraz winning the men's Wimbledon title and the national soccer team winning the European Championship either side of the Valderrama victory.

“It was an unbelievable day for Spanish sports," he added. "Alcaraz winning Wimbledon, then we won the individual and the team tournament in Valderrama, and then it was finished off with the Spanish national team winning the Euros so it was just a dream come true for Spanish sports.”

The win was an important one for Garcia, who just a week earlier had missed out on earning a spot at The Open Championship after falling just short in Final Qualifying. While missing out on earning a 100th major start at Royal Troon will have been tough to take, Garcia needed no more incentive heading to Valderrama, with the chance to win in front of a home crowd more than enough to spur him on.

"Of course, you go to West Lancs to try and qualify. You are close and don’t qualify but at the end of the day I did everything I could," he added. "I was already fuelled to go to Valderrama because I love that place. It is a LIV event too which is always fun and to be played in my home country in front of my home crowds is always special, so I was very happy with how things went."

Two weeks on he now has the chance to become just the second player to secure back-to-back LIV titles at JCB Country and Golf Club, and it is an opportunity to look forward to. "It is nice to have the possibility. I am looking forward to hopefully playing well here, and then putting myself in with another chance of winning.

"It is not easy, it is a very tricky course. There are lots of things you have to know and believe as there are a lot of blind shots, but I am excited and I am ready to give it a shot."
