    Tornado in Halifax County confirmed as EF-1, NWS reports

    UPDATE 4:51 P.M. HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. ( WFXR ) — The National Weather Service has released more details surrounding the tornado that touched down in Halifax County, confirming it was an EF-1 level.

    According to NWS, the tornado initially touched down near the intersection of Chatham Road and Ridgeway Road in the western part of the county. It then strengthened as it moved eastward, snapping down numerous trees along its path. However, NWS reports the tornado caused no significant damage to any structures or property, and there were no injuries or fatalities.

    The tornado eventually lifted in central Halifax County just east of Hwy 501 near the intersection of Murphy Ridge Road.

    In total, NWS estimates the tornado’s maximum wind to reach 100 mph with a maximum width of 75 yards, traveling a length of 9.3 miles.

    HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. ( WFXR ) – The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado occurred in Halifax County on Wednesday, July 24.

    The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has said a survey team traveled to the Halifax area to assess the damage from yesterday’s storms.

    Preliminary findings indicate a tornado did occur.

    National Weather Service officials say a final assessment will be released that will include a rating and the tornado’s path.
