(The Center Square) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democratic lawmakers endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president Thursday as the presumed Democratic presidential candidate.
Following President Joe Biden’s recent decision to step back from running for reelection, many Democrats are mustering up support for Harris as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., praised Biden during her opening remarks, citing his “selfless patriotism.”
Clark went on to show support for Harris.
“The Democratic women of the House offer our proud, full-throated endorsement of her campaign for President of the United States,” Clark said.
“The American people face a choice in the months ahead,” Clark said. “Will we have freedom for all or power for a few?”
Pelosi praised Biden’s decision to “pass the torch” to Harris.
“With love and gratitude, I salute President Biden for always believing in the possibilities of America,” Pelosi said.
Several of the House Democrats emphasized Harris’ “strength” during the talk.
“Kamala is about strength and determination in terms of public policy,” Pelosi said.
“I have seen her strength,” Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, said. “I have seen her as America, have seen her stand up for law and order and justice.”
Several of the Democrats had scathing words for former President Donald Trump during the conversation.
“Two years ago, the MAGA justices on the Supreme Court ripped away reproductive freedoms from tens of millions of Americans with their Dobbs decision,” Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., said. “For the first time in America’s history, young women have fewer rights than their grandmothers.”
Chu repeated a now debunked Democratic refrain, saying that Trump would pass a national abortion ban “on day one” if he is reelected.
“No one is better prepared than Vice President Harris to prosecute the case against Donald Trump,” Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., said. “Elections are about a choice, and this November we have a choice between a hardworking prosecutor and a convicted felon.”
The conservative presidential blueprint created by a coalition of right-leaning group, Project 2025, was another pressing topic that was brought up among the Democrats.
Barragán criticized Project 2025, calling it “extreme.”
Barragán later slammed Trump’s choice of Vice Presidential running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio.
“His choice of J.D. Vance made clear that he has an anti-woman agenda if he gets back in the White House,” Barragán said.
Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., praised President Joe Biden for his “selflessness” and lauded his speech from Wednesday night.
A member of the press asked about Vice President Harris’ role as the Southern Border czar.
“Well first of all, this is more misinformation and disinformation,” Barragán said. “The Vice President was never in charge of the border, she was never in charge of immigration policy.”
Harris, who did in fact lead the border issue for Biden , has come under fire recently as many House Republicans call for her impeachment over her handling of the border crisis, as The Center Square previously reported .
Several unanswered questions remain amidst Harris' presidential campaign, including who she plans to choose as a potential running mate .
