NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Grocery carts everywhere are filling up with more beans and less beef because of the high prices.
According to a survey by Savings.com , nearly 80% of people have cut back on their groceries.
One in three Americans are concerned about their ability to afford enough food, so here are the top five items that shoppers are avoiding:
- Candy
- Beef cuts
- Soda
- Chips
- Alcohol
But with that, there are five items that people are adding to their cart instead:
- Beans of lentils
- Canned goods
- Oatmeal
- Chicken
- Pasta
Included in the survey , it appears that women and young adults are the ones who are making spending cuts in the grocery store compared to men and older people.
More pedestrians and cyclists on the roads due to warm weather The average household typically spends about $580 every month on groceries alone.
37% of Americans are either extremely or very concerned about being able to afford enough food, but even more are worried about the affordability of healthy food. About 56% of people have bought either generic or store-brand products versus name-brand.
The survey even shows that some people are taking a DIY approach to reduce their spending by cooking, baking, and gardening at home.
Here are 14 ways that people are confronting the rising costs:
- Coupon clipping
- Buying in bulk
- Buying store-brand or generic
- Shopping sales and discounts
- Signing up for loyalty programs and/or rewards
- Meal planning
- Shopping at discount stores
- Avoiding non-essential or impulse items
- Home cooking/baking
- Going to different stores for better prices
- Shopping online and picking up via curbside
- Using apps and rebate programs
- Reducing the consumption of meat
- Growing veggies and herbs in a garden
