PHOENIX — As Arizona’s summer heat and wildfire season intensify, highway closures are becoming more frequent, leading to potential delays for travelers. These closures are sometimes necessary due to the rapid spread of forest fires, which can require full road closures or lane restrictions to ensure safety.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (AZDFFM) emphasize that these unplanned closures are critical for protecting both the public and first responders.

“We work to minimize closures and keep at least one lane open whenever possible,” said Brett Rupp, ADOT highway maintenance supervisor in Payson.

“However, the safety of everyone involved, from emergency responders to travelers, is our top priority. It's not safe for vehicles to pass through an area affected by a fire, and our goal is to safeguard everyone on the road.”

During a brush fire, wildland firefighters may need to park their vehicles on the highway, resulting in extended lane closures. Helicopters and low-flying aircraft dropping fire retardant might also stage on the highway.

Although this is essential for effective firefighting, it can create safety hazards for motorists.

“Low-flying aircraft dropping retardant pose a significant safety risk,” said Tiffany Davila, public affairs officer for AZDFFM. “These aircraft fly at low altitudes to be effective and minimize traffic interference. We need to prevent potential hazards for both drivers and aircraft.”

Smoke from fires can also reduce visibility, complicating driving conditions. Even if a wildfire appears to be distant, firefighters can anticipate its movement and implement road closures as a precaution.

“If a fire is expected to affect a highway, such as Interstate 17, closures will be put in place quickly to clear the area and ensure driver safety,” Davila added.

According to ADOT, motorists should exercise caution when following alternate routes suggested by navigation apps. Avoid unpaved roads and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent starting additional fires.

    Key precautions include:

    • Avoid parking or driving through dry grass, as the heat from your vehicle can ignite a fire.
    • Never discard lit cigarettes from your vehicle.
    • Ensure trailer chains are securely fastened to prevent sparks.
    • Check tire pressure to avoid sparks from exposed rims.
