Gov. Kelly requests extension for severe thunderstorm declaration

KANSAS (KOAM) -- Governor Laura Kelly is asking FEMA to extend the major severe thunderstorm disaster declaration.

According to the Adjutant General's Department for the State of Kansas, the letter is asking for an extension following storms that impacted the state on June 26 through July 7.

"Severe storms continue to impact Kansans, stretching state and local resources thin," Governor Laura Kelly said. "Additional time is needed to collect data and validate all expenses to aid local governments in restoring the infrastructure vital to the safety and well-being of their communities."

State officials say Governor Kelly is asking to extend the declaration to October 5, 2024 for anyone who had storm damage to submit to the public assistance program.
