System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan has been granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a reusable shipping container that he invented. The musician shared the news on his Instagram account, posting images of both the patent and the container design.
The drummer wrote, “So excited to get my first patent! It’s a long process but being an inventor has been rewarding in so many ways! This is a reusable, rechargeable and completely secure shipping container that can replace cardboard boxes. It can eliminate massive amounts of waste and is applicable to all aspects of delivery including food and collectables.”
Asked in the comments how long it took from concept to patent, Dolmayan responded, “5 years.”
Another person commented, “Corrugated boxes are reusable, renewable, and recyclable. They are also inexpensive. Most companies have a green packaging initiative until they see the cost.” To which Dolmayan answered, “And 90% end up in landfills … this can help end that waste.”
It is unclear what materials are used in Dolmayan’s invention, but it seems to have an electronic element, according to the illustration and to his use of the word “rechargeable” in his description.
Dolmayan received kudos from his musical peers in the comments, with his bandmate Shavo Odadjian remarking, “Congratulations my bro!,” and Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk writing, “That’s cool!”
During the last couple election cycles, Dolmayan largely used his Instagram to promote right-wing policies while endorsing and praising Donald Trump — even admitting that he’s lost “friends” and “hundreds of thousands of fans” due to his political beliefs. He seems to have toned down his political commentary as of late, although he did react to the recent attempted assassination on Trump, writing, “To those of you who are angry right now calm yourself. We all have friends who lean conservative or liberal, republican or democrat. Take no action to harm anyone. Only a deranged person would commit this act and they are in every party and every ideology.”
He added, “Vote your conscience in November but whoever wins we must all make an effort to bring back dignity and common sense thinking. Listening to those who think differently and having debate that is civil and respectful. Any politician that advocates for violence should be held responsible when violence occurs. There are many unhinged lunatics out there, that must not lead to the chaos they so badly want.”
