Marvel Has No ‘Immediate Plans’ to Recast Wolverine, Reveals Kevin Feige

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirmed that there are no immediate plans to recast Wolverine for the Marvel Cinematic Universe , meaning that Hugh Jackman ‘s version will remain the definitive live-action take on the character for at least a few more years.

While promoting Deadpool & Wolverine , Feige opened up about eventually recasting the fan-favorite mutant, revealing that whoever signs on to play Wolverine next will need to bring something new to the role.

“I think it will be in a very different style and a different way. I think if somebody were to attempt to do a Hugh Jackman as Wolverine impression, that would be a pretty big mistake,” Feige explained. “But as comic readers know, there are various and very, very different versions of these characters over the decades and it would be fun to explore different ones someday down the line.”

He continued, “Again, I’m not . . . we don’t have immediate plans by any means. But in the decades to come, I think it’s inevitable, but I think if that happens, it would have to be a very different and bold reinterpretation of it because no one will be as great as Hugh Jackman at doing his version of Wolverine.”

How long has Hugh Jackman played Wolverine?

Deadpool & Wolverine will mark Jackman’s tenth time playing Logan/Wolverine. He made his debut as the fan-favorite mutant over 20 years ago in 20th Century Studios’ X-Men (2000), going on to appear as a lead character in the sequels X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). He also made cameo appearances in the X-Men prequel films X-Men: First Class (2011) and X-Men: Apocolypse (2016).

Jackman also starred in three solo films as Wolverine due to the character’s popularity — X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and Logan (2017). The latter was originally billed as his final performance as the character before he agreed to return for Deadpool & Wolverine, which reunites Jackman with Ryan Reynolds ‘ Merc with a Mouth for the first time since X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman’s Wolverine variant is sent on a Time Variance Authority mission with Reynold’s Deadpool to save the multiverse. Shawn L e vy directed the movie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

Besides Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Shioli Kutsuna, Lewis Tan, and Rob Delaney, who are all returning from the previous Deadpool movies. The cast also includes Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Aaron Stanford, Jennifer Garner, Dafne Keen, Tyler Mane, and Wunmi Mosaku.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters on July 26, 2024.
