Ted Cruz says ‘border czar’ Kamala Harris views illegal immigrants as ‘future Democrat votes’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) accused Vice President Kamala Harris of viewing illegal immigrants as “future Democrat votes” during his criticism of her doing “nothing” to secure the southern border.

Cruz’s comment comes as Harris is currently the presumptive Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election after President Joe Biden bowed out of the race Sunday. Republican lawmakers have been very critical of the Biden administration’s handling of securing the border, with Cruz stating that Harris “is directly responsible” for the “invasion” along the border.

“As you rightly noted, she’s been to the border a total of one time in her four years as vice president,” Cruz said on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus. “She went to El Paso. They cleaned it up so she saw no illegal aliens. She didn’t go to what was then the epicenter of the invasion, that was the Rio Grande Valley. She couldn’t be bothered to go there. She didn’t go to Eagle Pass, which is where the crisis moved next. She didn’t go to Del Rio. Del Rio is a very small town on the Rio Grande. It’s about 30,000 people live in Del Rio. I was there when in a single day, there were more than 10,000 Hessian illegal immigrants crossing into Del Rio!”

Cruz continued his criticism by pointing out how Harris was in Houston, Texas , to speak to the American Federation of Teachers . He argued this is because Harris is more concerned about opposing school choice over securing the border, and stated he thinks educational freedom is “the civil rights issue of the 21st century.”

“They’re more interested in the dollars and the political foot soldiers of the teachers unions than they are in the children who are being left behind,” Cruz said. “Kamala has zero interest in actually securing the border because she looks at 11 million illegal immigrants and sees future Democrat votes as far as the eye can see.”

Cruz is up for reelection this November and is running against Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX). Cruz predicted Allred will want to distance himself from Harris in the months to come. He has suggested paying for Allred and Harris to do a campaign rally in the Rio Grande valley together in celebration of Harris’s handling of the border.

The House of Representatives voted 220-196 on Thursday in favor of a resolution condemning the Biden administration and Harris for their “failure to secure the southern border” during record-high illegal immigration. The bill, which does not hold any legislative authority or action, is expected to be a messaging bill in the upcoming election cycle, and had six Democrats join all Republicans in supporting it.

In the wake of Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election and his endorsement of Harris, multiple media outlets , including CNN, MSNBC, and ABC News, have backpedaled on labeling the vice president as the “border czar.”
