Mountainous views and ample outdoor recreation often help to land Colorado among the top spots for retirees in many rankings, but according to two recent data analyses – one from Forbes and one from Bankrate – the Centennial State might not be as great as it seems for those in their golden years.

A recent Bankrate report sought to determine which states around the country were the best for retirees in 2024, taking into account affordability, quality of healthcare, general well-being, weather, and crime.

After crunching the numbers, Colorado ended up ranking near the bottom of the list – 44th among the 50 US states. While the state ranked second in terms of quality and cost of healthcare, the state ranked poorly in all other categories, including 42nd in terms of weather, 39th in terms of affordability, and 37th in terms of crime.

On the Bankrate ranking, Delaware ranked first and Alaska ranked last, overall.

Meanwhile, a recent Forbes report touched on 'worst places for older adult falls,' noting that falls can be among top risks for older retirees.

In this report, Colorado ranked as the third-worst state for 'older adult falls,' with 920 deaths from falls recorded in 2021.

So, there you have it – while many believe Colorado would be a great spot for retirement, some data shows that the determination isn't as clear-cut as it seems.
