How to Care for a Foal

It's always a beautiful, magical thing when we welcome new life into the world and see these kids bond with a new life is so cool. Plus, the kids will get to learn so much about how to help a mama horse care for her foal along the way.

According to The American Quarter Horse Journal , helping with foaling involves many different things to consider, including whether indoors or outdoors is best, making sure you have the best supplies on hand, and knowing who to call if you need help.

"It’s always a good idea to make preparations for foaling well in advance and to have a plan in case something goes wrong," the site explains. "The vast majority of mares will foal at night when activity around the barn is minimal. Therefore, if a problem develops, you might be alone and on your own."

They suggest having your veterinarian's phone number on the ready and a backup veterinarian you can call too "in case a problem arises."

"If the mare is older or has a history of foaling problems, it wouldn’t hurt to have a stock trailer or roomy horse trailer hooked up and ready to go, just in case," the American Quarter Horse Association adds.

They also suggest having a dim light near by so you can keep an eye on Mama without bothering her too much.

After baby is born and all checks have been made, the beautiful bonding can begin.
