The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) recently recognized Lowndes Academy for its excellence among schools throughout Alabama.

The association has named Lowndes a Blue Ribbon School, an honor reserved for institutions of learning which meet standards of excellence in areas like ACT scores, professional development for teachers and a variety of academic areas.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” said Lowndes Academy Headmaster Barry Mohun. “It’s a credit to our teachers and our students.”

As a member of the AISA, Mohun said students compete in academic contests within the school and among peers from across the state.

“It’s really great for us to compete against each other, but also against other schools,” Mohun said. “A lot of people say we focus a lot on athletics, but our number one focus is on academics.”

In addition to earning the prestigious Blue Ribbon title, Lowndes Academy was also the recipient of the AISA Class A Chairman’s Award for the 2023-2024 school year.

An award letter sent July 17 explained the award’s purpose — to recognize member schools achieving athletic excellence during the school year. After earning state championships in multiple sports, Lowndes Academy earned the recognition the award was created to convey.

“This award serves as a symbol of recognition to the individuals who have given unselfishly of their time to serve as Chairperson of the AISA Athletic Committee,” the letter noted. “The criteria for winning the AISA Chairman’s Award includes achievement in all areas of the school’s athletic programs: state champions in all sports, participation in different sports, finishing in the top four in State Play-offs, sportsmanship, student-athlete award and no eligibility problems.”

Mohun said the school is honored to receive the award for the second year in a row.

“Because of the success we’ve had in different sports and in different areas, then that is a reward,” Mohun said. “We won it last year and I am really proud of all our coaches and student-athletes.”
