    Nightly I-5 and local road lane and ramp closures in south King County will continue July 29–Aug. 5

    Drivers beware – next week will busy with construction-related closures in the south King County area.

    Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close lanes and ramps on I-5 as they reconfigure the interstate for the final construction stage of the Veterans Drive tunnel.

    Crews will also close lanes on Des Moines Memorial Drive and South 200th Street to perform soil testing and build road improvements.

    This work is part of the SR 509 Completion Project.

    I-5 lane closure information

    Sunday, July 21 through Monday, August 5

    • The right lane on southbound I-5 is closed around the clock between South 259th Street and South 272nd streets, as part of Sound Transit’s Federal Way Link Extension project.

    Monday, July 29 through the morning of Wednesday, July 31

    • 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. – Up to two lanes of northbound I-5 will close nightly between SR 516 (Exit 149) and South 200th Street/Military Road South (Exit 151).
    • 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 will close nightly between South 200th Street/Military Road South (Exit 151) and SR 516 (Exit 149).

    Wednesday, July 31 through the morning of Friday, Aug. 2

    • 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. – Up to four lanes of northbound I-5 will close nightly between SR 516 (Exit 149) and South 200th Street/Military Road South (Exit 151). Lane closures will begin at 8 p.m., with four lanes closed by 11:59 p.m.
    • 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 will close nightly between South 200th Street/Military Road South (Exit 151) and SR 516 (Exit 149).
    • Drivers can also expect to encounter rolling slowdowns from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m.

    I-5 ramp closure information

    Wednesday, July 31 through the morning of Thursday, Aug. 1

    • 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. – The northbound I-5 to SR 516 off-ramp will close nightly. A signed detour will be in place.
    • 11:59 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. – The eastbound SR 516 to northbound I-5 on-ramp will close. A signed detour will be in place.

    Thursday, Aug. 1 through the morning of Friday, Aug. 2

    • 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. – The northbound I-5 to SR 516 off-ramp will close nightly.
    • 11 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. – The westbound SR 516 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close. A signed detour will be in place.

    Daytime local road closures

    Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 2

    • 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. – One lane of South 208th Street and one lane of 34th Avenue South will close. Flaggers will alternate traffic.

    Nighttime local road closures

    Monday, July 29 through the morning of Tuesday, July 30

    • 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. – One lane of Des Moines Memorial Drive South between South 194th Street and South 196th will close. Flaggers will alternate traffic.

    Tuesday, July 30 through the morning of Wednesday August 1.

    • 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. – One lane of South 200th Street between 18th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South will close. Flaggers will alternate traffic.

    SR 509 Completion Project information

    The SR 509 Completion Project builds 3 miles of new tolled highway between I-5 and South 188th Street near the south end of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The new highway will be completed in stages. The portion currently under construction between I-5 and 24th Avenue is scheduled to open in 2025. The final stage will build the remaining 2 miles of the expressway between 24th Avenue South and South 188th Street. The entire project is planned for completion by 2028.

    Puget Sound Gateway Program overview

    The SR 509 Completion Project is part of WSDOT’s Puget Sound Gateway Program, which also includes the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County. Combined, the two completion projects finish critical missing links in Washington’s highway and freight network.
