PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Citing a decline in revenue, WaterFire has decided to wrap up its lightings an hour earlier for the remainder of the summer.

WaterFire made the announcement online , stating that it is making an effort to reduce its expenses due sponsorship funds drying up. The nonprofit also said it’s still recovering from the long-term financial impacts of the pandemic.

“Our summer WaterFire events will now end at 11 p.m. instead of midnight,” the announcement reads.

There are four full lightings and one partial lighting left in the WaterFire season , with one scheduled for next Tuesday and another in late August.

It’s unclear whether the rest of the season will be impacted as well.

The capital city’s iconic art installation recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The lightings are free to attend and typically draw thousands to downtown Providence.

Anyone interested in donating to WaterFire to “keep the flames burning” can do so online .
