Hedberg Library will no longer charge late fines

JANESVILLE — The Hedberg Public Library Board of Trustees has voted to do away with library fines on all materials starting Sept. 1.

The vote took place Tuesday, July 16.

“We are hopeful that going fine free will encourage greater use of the library by those of limited income,” said board President Katy Grogan. “This decision reflects our commitment to removing barriers to the use of the library.”

Libraries across the country are making similar choices in an effort to increase access to better serve the most vulnerable members of their community.

“A library is more than a place for books,” said Library Director Eric Robinson. “It’s a community hub that should be accessible to all, and we’re eager to be more available to those who may need us the most.”

Robinson believes that going fine free and removing that barrier will invite everyone to explore, learn, and grow without the fear of overdue fees.

“Our mission is to make knowledge and resources available to everyone,” said Robinson. “We want to foster a love for reading and lifelong learning.”

The library’s fine free policy will only apply to late fines. There will still be a cost for lost or unreturned items. Library staff are working behind the scenes to finalize policies and procedures to support the board’s decision. Library users may already notice some changes in their account while staff work through the logistics of the process.

“We are excited to take an important step forward in our efforts to welcome and serve all members of the community,” added Grogan.
