Despite rain, drought persists in WV, KY & OH

(WOWK) — The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor is out (Thursday, July 25), showing that the entire WOWK-TV viewing area is under abnormally dry or moderate or severe drought conditions.

The previous week did see significant rainfall especially in the southern coalfield counties of Kentucky and West Virginia.

The weather is expected to be dry once again until early Monday. Significant rain is expected Monday and Tuesday with an occasional early shower next Wednesday (July 31) before things dry out for a few days again

At least one model (the American GFS) projects 2 to 3 inches of rain possible over the next 7 days which takes us through August 1st.

This model follows the official projection for the same 7 day period (7-25 to 8-1) as issued by the NOAA Weather Prediction Center.

This kind of rain should help some areas and there could also be some localized street flooding or small creeks that could fill up if training storms linger over the same areas for several hours.
