Olympics: Are Celine Dion, Lady Gaga performing at the opening ceremony?

(NEXSTAR) — The Paris Olympics are set to begin Friday, with more than 10,000 athletes from across the world set to showcase their talents. As monumental as the games will be, with new events and potentially broken records, it’s the opening ceremony that’s seemingly drawing the most attention.

For days, there has been speculation that Celine Dion will perform during the ceremony alongside Lady Gaga.

It would mark the first time the Grammy winner has taken the stage since sharing that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in December 2022. The rare neurological disorder, which affects about 1 or 2 people per million, “is characterized by fluctuating muscle rigidity in the trunk and limbs and a heightened sensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms,” according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Rumors that Dion would return to any stage have been circulating lately. Speaking with People in June, Dion said, “We’re talking about putting a show together, and I have so many ideas. I can’t wait.”

Then, NBC News reported earlier this week that Dion and Lady Gaga had arrived in Paris ahead of the opening ceremony. Cameras have captured both waving at and interacting with fans outside a Paris hotel.

“Every time I return to Paris, I remember there’s so much beauty and joy still to experience in the world,” Dion posted to Instagram on Wednesday. “I love Paris, and I’m so happy to be back!”

Gaga was also reportedly seen rehearsing on a floating piano on the River Seine, where the opening ceremony will take place Friday. Some X users have speculated the chromatic hooded figure in a teaser video posted by the Olympic Games last week is a nod to Gaga’s “Chromatica” album.

While neither Dion, Gaga, nor the Olympics have said whether one or either of the pop stars is part of the opening ceremony, TMZ reports it has confirmed the pair will perform “La Vie en Rose.” Gaga sang Édith Piaf’s classic in her 2018 film, “A Star Is Born.”

Spokespersons for the games and both artists did not respond to other outlets’ requests for comment regarding whether they or any other performers would appear during the opening ceremony.

For now, you’ll have to wait and see. The ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m. EDT/7:30 p.m. CEST and is expected to last more than three hours.

Dion has performed at the Olympics before, singing “The Power of the Dream” during the open ceremony in Atlanta in 1996 . She surprised many when she appeared on stage to present Taylor Swift with her record-breaking Grammy earlier this year. It came just a short time after Dion’s sister said the singer didn’t “have control over her muscles.”
