France’s high-speed rail services have been thrown into turmoil after a series of fires were “deliberately set” ahead of the Paris Olympics ceremony on Friday.

Blazes were started at key installations just hours before the Games officially began, with fans hoping to take the Eurostar to host city Paris told to postpone their trips.

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said France had been hit with a series of “coordinated malicious acts”.

Eurostar said journey times in both directions between London and Paris were expected to be delayed by up to 90 minutes “due to coordinated acts of malice in France”.

This is because trains were being switched to conventional “classic” tracks – rather than the 186mph high-speed track – due to damage to signalling installations near Arras.
