Back in 1976, Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King were twenty-something journalists working at Baltimore’s WZJ station, with Oprah a news anchor and Gayle a production assistant.

Speaking to O, The Oprah Magazine , in 2006, Gayle revealed that the two formed an immediate bond when Oprah generously invited Gayle to stay at her house for the night when she was left stranded because of a snowstorm.

And in a recent appearance on Melinda French Gates’ Moments That Make Us interview series, Oprah, now 70, said: “We’ve talked every night since, about everything and nothing.”

Gayle joined Oprah for the interview, and together, the two opened up about their almost 50-year friendship — including the long-running speculation that they are secretly a couple.

“Gayle is the mother, sister, friend that I never had,” Oprah explained before revealing that Gayle was the only one who believed in her when she decided to move from Baltimore to Chicago to pursue her broadcasting career.

“When I was leaving Baltimore, I was about to turn 30, and everyone told me I was walking into a landmine by moving to Chicago,” she said. “Gayle was the only person who said: ‘I think you can do it.’”

“We bonded because we had very like philosophies about people,” Gayle added of the early days of their friendship. “We were so in sync about so many different things.”

And considering they’ve been by one another’s side as their respective careers have prospered over the decades, Melinda asked the two stars how they navigated how much of their friendship to share with the world.

“I think we’ve shared pretty much everything,” Oprah said. “And I would have to say, it wasn’t even a matter of navigation.”

“You know, for years, people used to say we were gay,” she continued. “And listen, we were up against that forever, and people still may think it.”

“And I used to say to her: ‘You’ve got to do a show on this, because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday night [without] people thinking we’re gay!” Gayle exclaimed. “Because if we were gay, we’d tell you!”

Melinda then praised the two stars for teaching society that “women can have deep, true friendships.”

“I think you’re right Melinda, because one of the things I’ve started to think was maybe people aren’t accustomed to seeing women with this kind of truth bond,” Oprah agreed. “Meaning, the reason why I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier, not happy, happier for me for any kind of success or victory than I am for myself.”

“I feel as happy as she does; I can’t be happier than she is; I’m equally as happy for her,” she added, as Gayle joked that nobody can “out-happy” her.

Oprah went on to add that over the years, she has had friends show signs of jealousy or bitterness towards her, concluding: “You can’t be friends with anybody who has a hint of jealousy about anything that you’re doing. Certainly about your success or being celebrated or anything that you have. You cannot be friends if you see that in somebody.”

Gayle said that she had no idea that she and Oprah’s friendship was so unique, explaining that she “just assumed that every woman has at least one” really good friend.

And while their friendship has been integral to the major life decisions that they’ve made over the last 48 years, with Gayle saying that she “wouldn’t dream of” making a big decision without discussing it with Oprah first, it is also rooted in frivolity and being honest with one another.

For example, highlighting just how much they love to gossip together, Gayle quipped: “I heard [Oprah] on TV once say: ‘I don’t gossip, I don’t believe in gossip.’ I called her and said: ‘When did that start?!’”

She also acknowledged the yes-men that can surround Oprah on account of her astronomical fame as she explained: “In Oprah’s life, everybody is always very flattering and is always very agreeable with things that she says. And sometimes I’ll just go: ‘That’s just not true, your hair does not look good.’”

Oprah laughed as the two women agreed that they had both done that to the other over the years.
