Heat, Smoke, and Storms: North Dakota and Minnesota Brace for Extreme Weather

Grand Forks, ND – July 26, 2024The National Weather Service has issued several alerts for eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, warning of extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and potential severe weather through the weekend. Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions as they face a combination of hazardous conditions.

    Heat Advisory in Effect

A Heat Advisory is in place from noon today until 9 PM CDT, with heat index values expected to reach up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The affected areas include portions of northwest and west central Minnesota, as well as northeast and southeast North Dakota. The heat, combined with high humidity, could pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The National Weather Service advises residents to stay hydrated, remain in air-conditioned environments, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas, and be aware of the symptoms of heat stroke, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.

Air Quality Concerns Due to Wildfire Smoke

Lingering wildfire smoke from the Pacific Northwest and Canada continues to impact air quality in the region. Sensitive groups, including individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, children, and older adults, may experience health effects from the poor air quality. The National Weather Service recommends that those affected limit outdoor activities, particularly in areas where smoke is visible.

    Severe Weather Outlook

The forecast also includes a low (Level 1 out of 5) risk of severe weather this evening, with a slightly higher risk (Level 2) expected on Saturday afternoon and evening. The primary threats include strong winds, hail, and heavy rainfall, which could lead to excessive runoff in poor drainage and urban areas, particularly in northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

The potential for severe weather continues into Sunday, with another low risk of storms that could produce damaging winds and localized flooding.

    Precautionary Measures:

    • For Heat: Drink plenty of water, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces, and monitor vulnerable individuals.
    • For Air Quality: Limit outdoor exertion and stay indoors if sensitive to smoke.
    • For Severe Weather: Stay informed through local news and weather updates, and be prepared to seek shelter if severe storms develop.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to stay vigilant and prepared, as these combined weather conditions could significantly impact daily life and health. Spotter activation may be required this evening to report severe weather developments.
