If you've been wondering "Will the heat ever end?" the Old Farmer's Almanac's fall 2024 forecast may have the answer.

Will record-breaking heat let up in the Midwest?

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a warmer-than-usual autumn for most of the western U.S., including the Iowa. After a wet spring and record flooding, it says Iowans should prepare for a below-average season of rainfall.

It might finally cool down in October, when temperatures are expected to be around normal for most of the Midwest. Hurricane season runs through November and the Old Farmer's Almanac says to expect above-normal activity and for 2024's hurricane count to exceed last year’s.

Will any of Iowa's neighbors get cooler weather?

Most of Iowa's neighboring states will see above-average temperatures as well. Unless you're in the Great Lakes or Appalachians, odds are it's going to be warm.

Drier-than-average conditions are the forecast from the Midwest and the Plains through most of the West, the Farmers' Almanac says. Precipitation will be above normal from the Upper Midwest through northern portions of the Heartland in October, though.

The Upper Midwest may finally start to see some cooler temperatures in October too.

How does the Old Farmer's Almanac make predictions?

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac website , predictions are made by comparing solar activity with weather patterns. It reports using multiple academic disciplines for its predictions, including solar science, climatology and meteorology.

The weather forecast methodology is the modern version of a formula created by the Almanac's founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792, according to the website.

How accurate is the Old Farmer's Almanac's?

The Old Farmer's Almanac claims an 80% accuracy rate on its predictions.
