    Friday’s Five Facts

[1] MDC: 3rd inmate ‘inadvertently’ released this month after error – MDC officials say the Office of Professional Standards will be investigating an incident where an inmate was released prematurely. According to MDC, 44-year-old Desiree Sanchez was released Wednesday, making her the third inmate released from the facility too soon. Police arrested Anthony Jaramillo Thursday, he was the first inmate inadvertently released this month. Two weeks later another man was also released due to what officials say was a “human error.” Following the second release, MDC said, an exhaustive review of releasing policies and procedures were underway at the facility.

[2] U.S. Attorney indicts key figures in major human smuggling operation crackdown – The U.S. Attorney for New Mexico has announced indictments against eight members in a human smuggling operation, including its leader. A joint task force had been investigating the Lopez human smuggling operation for years. The task force said  Ronaldo Galindo Lopez-Escobar is the leader of the Lopez Crime Family. Lopez-Escobar and seven other members of the crime family were indicted for conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal migrants.

[3] Stormier weather & slightly cooler temperatures around New Mexico – As temperatures rise into the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and near 100 degrees across the region, more moisture in the air, with the daytime heating, will still lead to more pockets of rainfall, especially in the Gila National Forest once again and from the mountain ranges of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the Sacramento Mountains, as well as many communities in the Rio Grande Valley. Later this weekend, the atmosphere will dry out more from top to bottom with temperatures climbing even more once again through next week.

[4] Petition asks ABQ City Council to pump the brakes on e-bikes in the Bosque – A proposed ordinance would open trails in some Albuquerque Open Spaces to every class of e-bike. The ordinance would create a 20 mph speed limit for those bikes, saying it could help those with disabilities access trails. An Albuquerque woman has gathered hundreds of signatures to table the ordinance, saying the public didn’t have enough time to weigh in on the issue and careful planning is needed to make sure the trails are safe for all users.

[5] BernCo, CABQ asking for input on how to spend opioid settlement funding – Bernalillo County and Albuquerque residents are invited to give input on how to spend millions of dollars from an opioid settlement. The funds are from lawsuits filed by state and local governments against companies who contributed to the opioid crisis. The county and city are hosting a series of public meetings for public input on developing a strategic spending plan. The next meeting is scheduled for July 31, at Patrick J. Baca Library.
