Wonderland Korean Movie 2024 Ending Explained: What Happens at the End?

Wonderland Korean movie releases globally on Netflix on Friday, July 26, 2024. It tells the stories of characters in different scenarios using an artificial intelligence (AI) service. It helps the grieving reconnect to their lost ones. The sci-fi fantasy film stars Bae Suzy, Park Bo-Gum, Tang-Wei, Choi Woo-Shik, and Jung Yu-Mi in lead roles.

The official synopsis reads, “When artificial intelligence enables the grieving to talk to the lost, a flight attendant and a mother grapple with the meaning of reality and humanity.” Originally, it was released in theaters in South Korea on June 5, 2024. Filmmaker Kim Tae-Yong is the director and screenwriter.

Wonderland Korean movie 2024 ends with the characters choosing the path of reality or illusion. Hae-Ri (Jung Yu-Mi) and her junior Hyeon-Su (Choi Woo-Shik) run an AI service, Wonderland. They help people reconnect with their beloved who has either died or is in a coma.

A mother, Bai Li (Tang Wei), makes the deal before her death so that she can talk to her young daughter. On the other hand, flight attendant Jeong-In (Bae Suzy), uses the service to reconnect with her boyfriend, Tae-Ju (Park Bo-Gum). He is in a coma. One of the factors of the service is that the deceased or comatose person will not remember that they are not in the real world anymore. Towards the end, the two women have to decide if they will pick reality over illusion.

Did Tang Wei break the Wonderland system?

Before dying, Bai Li signs up for the Wonderland service. She explains that her illusion form should be an archaeologist. After her death, Bai Li’s AI version appears at a fictional airport, however, she doesn’t know that everything is fake. She meets Seong Jun (Gong Yoo), who is her deceased husband. Although she doesn’t recognize him, he meets her as a stranger and befriends her.

Bai Li’s daughter is unaware of her mother’s death. Her grandmother helps the child reconnect with Bai Li. While they enjoy their daily interactions, Bai Li’s mother slowly breaks down. The elder knows that her daughter has died. When she tries to end the service, the daughter creates a ruckus. Soon, Bai Li discovers the truth and reveals it to her daughter.

However, in that process, Bai Li’s interference breaks the system. Hae-Ri decides to reboot but there will be consequences. The mother’s data will be refreshed and she won’t remember whatever happened in the past few days. In the end, the system backs up and the family decides to continue their illusion. Bai Li’s story starts again at the same airport where she meets Seong Jun once again.

What happens between Bae Suzy and Park Bo-Gum?

Jeong-In and Tae-Ju once used to be a happy couple but the latter went into a coma. So, she seeks the AI service to reconnect with her boyfriend. The illusion version of the latter is of an astronaut in space. Through video calls, they share many happy moments. However, one day, Tae-Ju comes out of the coma and things become complicated.

Although her boyfriend is recovering, Jeong-In finds it difficult to resume their lives as a couple. She misses the AI Tae-Ju and eventually gives in. Jeong-In continues the service and talks to him. Meanwhile, the real Tae-Ju is confused about why his girlfriend seems unhappy in their relationship. In the end, she tells him the truth because she feels guilty. Tae-Ju somehow understands her pain and decides to leave her so that she can create happy memories with the fake Tae-Ju. But Jeong-In accepts the reality, and cancels the service, going back to her boyfriend.

Aside from the two major stories, Wonderland movie also features a segment between Song Jeong-Ran and her grandson. Through the service, Hae-Ri helps a grandmother reunite with her deceased grandson. However, the AI version begins to demand expensive things from his grandma, leading to financial troubles. Hence, Hae-Ri takes the matter into her own hands and tells the grandson that Jeong-Ran has died.
